When I started to be ready to actually write a useful program myself I was worried about it might only work on one platform. If the program had a graphical user interface, then it would probably be tied to Windows. So I learned Swing and so far all my non web applications have been Swing apps.

Java gives you the chance to learn one GUI toolkit and your program will be useful in any platform.

Other options (GTK, QT, wxWidgets) are so much difficult to use.

Sometimes when I code I end up wishing for features from other languages. I catch myself saying "why can't I do this in ObjC?" or "This was a good thing in C++, why can't I do this?". Not even once have I ran into "I wish this language was more like Java".

I wish your luck with your new languages. You should add Lua to that list, it's quite an interesting language. Also add Javascript, for the shear good of knowing it rather than actually use it.

Arguably your letter justifies reducing funding for your school: since they clearly have an abundance of resources so that first graders are exceeding in areas where presumably other areas are deficient, shouldn't the state shift funding for better equity across the state?

Now, that's why I believe in local funding: your community should support and promote excellence, not be subject to the caprice or largesse of politicians.

Sorry--notice this was an old letter, but just came across your blog. How did everything turn out? Did you get any responses?
